🔥 A rare physical Bitcoin worth $1.78 million just got cracked open after sitting untouched for 12 years.
The coin was a Casascius coin, a physical metal token created by Bitcoin early adopter Mike Caldwell between 2011 and 2013. Each coin had a real private key hidden beneath a tamper-evident holographic sticker. Once the sticker was peeled, the Bitcoin inside could be accessed. But doing so destroyed the coin's collector status forever.
This particular coin held 25 Bitcoin. When it was minted it was worth less than $100. Today those 25 coins are worth $1.78 million.
The transaction was confirmed on June 2 at block 952,159 with a mining fee of just $2.79. Blockchain data suggests the owner only sent 0.01 BTC to an external address and returned the rest to the original address, possibly testing the private key before making a full move. The bulk of the Bitcoin has not yet left the wallet.
Who opened it. Why now. And what they plan to do next. Nobody knows.
Tens of thousands of Bitcoin are still believed to be locked inside unopened Casascius coins sitting in drawers and safes around the world. Every one that gets peeled is gone from the collector market forever.
